Time capsule problem

Why is time capsule telling me it needs to make new backup, taking several hours? Has it lost my data?

Is this the message that appeared on your screen?

 

TM has completed etc.png

 

If yes, then your Time Machine backup file was corrupted, and Time Machine had to erase the current backups and start all over again with a new backup.

 

While this problem has been around for years, users who are running the Sierra and High Sierra operating system are seeing this issue appear much more often, so you might expect to see this message again in the future.
