12.7 iTunes Update
In multiple ways the recent update to Podcasts forced by the 12.7 'update' has failed the user base.
I've been listening to podcasts for more than a decade, and I've used iOS throughout that time (MacOS too). The podcasts app/section of iTunes has always been slightly awkward, but it used to do it's job in the end. The 12.7 update wrecked multiple areas of functionality, deleted large chunks of my library, created confusion between devices and content types and was clearly not properly thought out.
Before the update I had over 2500 separate podcasts saved on my iPhone and backed up on my Macbook Pro before the 12.7 update, and slightly over a dozen iTunes U courses on my iPad. After the 'update' I now have less than 10 podcast episodes (let alone podcasts), and no recovery option. Time Machine doesn't work, and my old podcasts were automatically deleted due to a setting change imposed by the update. I have permanently lost content that I've been using for teaching and it's no longer possible to re-download because I'd need the original file names to do so (which were conveniently deleted by iTunes). My triple-redundant backup was rendered moot by this update -- I'm NOT happy about that.
Because I have a Mac, iPhone and iPad, I have 3 separate instances of every podcast (after I sync my devices to my Mac) rather than the podcasts app realising that it's the same podcast appearing on 3 devices (this also happens with all of the thousands of tracks in my iTunes library despite it being stored by iTunes Match. Both problems have occurred with literally every update I've seen since OSX Lion. Basic SQL programming would allow Apple's development to spot this file duplication, and prevent it. Users should not need to wait more than five years for such a simple fix.
I also had many courses in iTunes U. Suddenly, entire courses that were subscribed appeared in my Podcasts list, missing important parts of the course material due to the 'so-called' update. I don't know which utter ignoramus decided this was a good idea, but they clearly had not enrolled in any course of substance as all tests, textbooks and other materials have vanished from the courses -- rendering entire courses moot due to the absence of the tests which were needed to show understanding during these courses. With MOOC's being increasingly popular, it seems bizarre to deliberately break iTunesU, and render it impossible for anyone to use iTunes or Apple's software to store MOOCS, but that's what you did.
I don't expect anyone at Apple to listen to this --- if they had observed their user base properly and considered their needs then Apple wouldn't have done this to their userbase the first place. But I do want to put this out there. Maybe some day Apple will start looking back at how good they were.
