External Hard Drive accidentally formatted to Mac

Hi all

I am new to Mac. I have connected my previous external hard drive (Toshiba 750Gb , USB 3.0) to my new MacBook Pro. The time machine app asked to use this External Hard Drive for back up copies, showing me a file of 71.2 Gb as incompatible (which I could identified as my previous Windows back up copies).

I was not familiar with Time machine app, so it has formatted my external hard drive, appearing empty, so I cannot access to all my data (mainly photos and videos). I am wondering if any of you have any advice as how to recover my data as I have contacted data recovery companies and they say is easy to recover it.
