New Macbook Pro(Late 2016) use "target display ...

Hi I just got my new Macbook Pro(Late 2016), and I want to connect it to my old iMac (Late 2009) as an external display.

My question is:  how to connect to make it work?

iMac27" 2009 only has mini displayport, the New Macbook Pro(Late 2016) only has Thunderbolt 3 port..

Thought there is an TB3 to TB2 adapter available in Apple Online Store, it says that adapter doesn't work in this situation.

Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. For more information, visit the Apple Support pagefor the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

Is the following setup works ?

new MBP tb3 port > tb3 to displayport adapter > DP to mini DP cable > iMac

I also see there are few Thunderbolt 3 Docks have Displayport (or mini Displayport) on them (like OWC ,Belkin, etc)

Can I use one of those to make it work ?

YES, I've read the article, but I also saw the note below the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (which I quoted in my original post) it says this adapter doesn't support...

so my main concern is there any confirmed ways or other 3rd party adapter/dock can convert the Thunderbolt 3 to mini Displayport (not Thunderbolt 2) since my old iMac only supports mini Displayport...

Hi @Mosu, I found this out the hard way also.

I am going to try to exchange my TB2 > TB3 adapter for a TB3/USBc > Mini DisplayPort, I am curious to know if this worked for you.

I am in the same boat.  Late 2009 Imac 27 inch . 2017 Macbook pro.  I purchased thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter.  Then tried both thunderbolt cable and mini display to mini display cable.  Neither of them are working at all.  I am at a loss, i tried every troubleshoot possible and no luck at all.  Any more research on this?
