Harddisk causes restarts

Hi everyone

So my MacBook 15" pro mid 2014 have recently been shutting down at complete random. When booting up again there is not the typical warning saying that "Your Mac shut down because of a problem..."

Ive tried doing a clean install but to no avail.

Ive taken it to the local authorised Mac repairment and we've narrowed it down to being the harddrive that is at faulty since we tried exchanging it with another and then it worked perfectly.

It also happens in SafeMode but a lot less so it would suggest a hardware issue and there is no report of a kernel panic...

Im currently running the latest update of OSX but it also occurred before HS

If more info is needed ask away...

If you've narrowed it down to a faulty hard drive, then the answer is to replace the hard drive.

You can run an EtreCheck report if you like (be sure to choose to show SMART status)

EtreCheck is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

Heres smart status

I don't see anything to indicate a failing hard drive. SMART reports no errors and the only problem in the Etrecheck report is WindowServer using high amount of CPU.

If you don't have a recent backup I would make one now.

You can try running Apple Diagnostics to check for hardware errors.

How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac - Apple Support

Other than that, I'm not sure what to suggest. Swapping out the hard drive would seem to be a solution judging by the results from the AASP doing the same. But I'd be reluctant to give up on a hard drive that shows no signs of failing.
