Mac not booting, stuck on start screen despite ...
My iMac has become unavailable for a few days. It started with working slowly until I was unable to boot up. I have run the Internet Recovery to find a way in. I ran a full Disk Repair using Disk Utility and a green message in the end that claims it successfully managed to repair my disk. Then I boot using my own HDD. The progress bar under the Apple icon continues towards the very end and then gets stuck there for good and I don't find my way inside.
I have also tried to Re-install my operating system but the OS my iMac was shipped with was Mountain Lion whereas my current OS is Mac OS Sierra and it is apparently not possible to downgrade.
I unfortunately do not have a Time Machine Back Up.
I have encountered two versions of Recovery:
- Using the Option + Command + R combination
- Using Option + D if I'm not mistaken. This option takes me into a seemingly older interface in which I am asked to run a test. The test reaches almost the end but the progress is never completed.
From what I gather, I may have a serious hard disk problem. But I am wondering how I can recover what's left of my HDD. I have some important docs that I unfortunately did not put on the cloud.
Any help is appreciated.
Can you boot into Safe mode? Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
If it still won't boot you can try Target Disk Mode Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support
- I cannot seem to enter the Safe Mode. When I hold the Shift key, it is ignored and the startup screen (Apple icon + progress bar) is displayed. I turn on the verbose mode so I can see what's going on in the background. It was on for more than eight hours. I received an endless stream of error logs there but the system did not boot. I began to feel I'm inside a loop there.
- Target Disk Mode seems to be the only option left. But sadly I do not have another Mac.
Any other help is appreciated.
Do you remember any of the errors from Verbose mode?
In the beginning I get loads of "Process crashed" messages the likes of "Too many corpses being created" which I have no idea what it means.
I was very lucky yesterday when all of a sudden I got one successful login (very slow and unresponsive display on my OS). I began to backup all my important data on my Dropbox. Unfortunately today, I have one fuse exploded in my apartment (it's an old one and I can't use many electronic devices simultaneously) and that was basically the only thing that shouldn't have happened. I'm stuck outside my OS again.
This is the latest thing I have done. I started my Mac in Single User Mode and ran
/sbin/fsck -fy
The system responded with "File System Was Modified". So I re-ran the command until I got "The volume appears to be OK". But I still do not seem to get into my Sierra.
I wonder how a repaired disk and an OK volume are still unable to boot up a system.
I just need to get the remaining files out so I can try formatting the HDD.
I wonder if it's stuck on an update?
crashed: too many corpses being created
Do you have any news about how to solve this problem? I have the same problem after High Sierra installation on a iMac 27" late 2009.
