Sierra: Finder Preferences

10.12.5 Sierra Finder preferences problem

I want all finder windows to open in a new window.  I am the only user of my computer.

Opening in tabs probably started after the last upgrade because this started happening without any action on my part. It's not something I would ever choose to do.  I searched online and found instructions.

So I unchecked the box in Finder Preferences > General to "open new folders in tabs instead of new windows."

This didn't fix the problem.

So I shut down and restarted, and that still didn't fix the problem.

I searched online again and found some instructions to remove the plist.

Various instructions for getting to the Library in Sierra don't work, such as:

1. pull down the “Go” menu and hold down the SHIFT key:  Library doesn't show up on the drop down list

2. press Command+Shift+L from the MacOS Finder to immediately jump to the ~/Library directory: only get "beep" sound. No Library directory shows up.

3. hold down the OPTION key rather than the SHIFT key: doing this opens the Downloads folder, not Library directory.

Any thoughts?
