Macbook Air keeps turning off....
Hi
I have a relatively new Macbook Air 13" 2012 running OS X 10.8.2.
My mac keeps turning itself off randomly. Almost like it goes to sleep. Mostly this happens when i'm running on battery. I have to keep switching it back on.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Did you manage to solve it?
Please let me know.
Thanks
Mark
In that case it is an intermittent power problem that you will not be able to fix.
Schedule a Genius Bar appointment, or call AppleCare.
https://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
AppleCare (in the US): 800-SOS-APPL
Apple will make it right.
Does it power back on normally, as if nothing happened, even if it remains on battery power?
Power or other problems involving unexpected system sleep, lights, or fans indicate an SMC reset is justified. Read all the steps.
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
- Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
- Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
- Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
- Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
- Shut down the computer.
- Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
- On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Hey John
Thanks for the quick response.
I tried this and it still happens.
It comes back on when I press the power button. But then could go off again almost immediately after that. Totally random.
Best regards
M

It started to happen to me too and I received it today from the warranty repair, can you belive that ?
Sending it again doesn't seem like fun to me.
Thanks John.
LHiBP when did you take it in?
Going to take it on the weekend.
I use it as my work laptop so i'm a bit annoyed...

Well, basically what happend with my MacBook Air was the "kernel_task" problem, don't know if you've heard about that but essentialy they have replaced the whole logic board and returned it back to me today (It took them almost 2 weeks to do that)
So I turned it on after picking it up from the courier and bam! - my MacBook Air randomly shuts down and turns on when I plug in the power charger into it while being completely turned off
Mine does this too! I got this laptop about 2 weeks ago and randomly it just goes to sleep, most of the time if i press the space bar it light back up nothing lost and if im watching a film or something it carries on from where it was but sometimes it goes all dark and just wont wake up for 3/4 minutes, it always has charge so cant be that. I thought it was when i tip it but it also does it when its just sitting there, very strange. I also use mine for working so if i knock it very slightly when im working it just goes off! Has yours been sorted?
Hey
I had to take it to the genius bar at my local apple store to fix it. It should only take a couple of days - 5 max to fix.
They replaced the motherboard on mine.
Ive had it back a few weeks ago but its still doing it (although not as much as before).
Will be taking it back again soon.
Give them a call today.

HI there, did you end up finding a solution to this? I'm having the same problem, exactly as you described.
It seems to be not uncommon from what I've seen online
Thanks

HI there, did you end up finding a solution to your shutdown problem? I'm having the same bug
Thanks
C
mine doesnt do it any more, ot sure if it just out grew it or if it was becasue i used to sit it on top of my laptop case which had magnets in it and i thought tht might be causing it...either way it doesnt do it anymore at all even when i tip it etc. Hope yours sorts itself out!
Hi everyone,
I've basically got the same problem as MarkyL101 : my MacBook Air running on the latest version of Mavericks keeps shutting down randomly. It does so when either I'm multi-tasking (i.e : watching a movie and have Mail opened) or when I have my iPhone plugged in and syncing all my songs.
As I've read so far, I need to bring the computer to an Apple Store in order for it to get fixed. I was wondering if anybody could enlighten on how much this will cost?
I am a student and therefore strongly hope that this won't cost me 3 months' rent.
Kind Regards,
Karl
I have the same problem with my MacBook Air 13 early 2015. I bought one and have the problem the same month so I have returned it assuming that the machine is not good. I bought a new one with Apple care warranty. Then the same problem continue many times. Apple tried everything from software to hardware but until now they could not do anything. Last week during the repair process I bought one temporary till they finish the repair and the new one also has the same problem. It seems that all logic boards are defective and Apple does not admit that. They should recall all MacBook Air early 2015.
Can you unselect System Pref > Energy Saver > Put hard disk to sleep when possible for both battery and power and see whether your problem goes away.
