Downloading Software from External CD drive

I need to download software from a CD but my MacBookPro does not see the external CD player, and the CD keeps ejecting.  What do I need to do?  Preferences is only asking what I want to do after inserting a music, picture or video CD.  No other choices.  Finder preferences are no help either.
