Macbook Pro nTB Battery Capacity Dropping Fast

Hi,

I noticed that my battery capacity has been quickly dropping since I purchased a new MacBook Pro in early January. The current capacity is at 93% of it's intended value. I've brought the laptop to the Apple Store once, they said that the battery was fine and working as expected but this was about a month and a half ago, when the maximum charge was 95%.

I'm currently at 4470 mAh and 26 cycles.

Is this a normal battery deterioration rate? What can I do if Apple's own testing does not find an issue?

Thanks

D.

Try to check your battery with Battery health which is available at Mac App Store for free.

Hi,

Apple's policy on batteries is that they are guaranteed for one year, to charge up to 80% capacity up to 1000 cycles. Right now, it sounds like you're within that range, so I doubt they're going to do anything about it, but only Apple can decide that.

I did. It's how I know

There are a lot of factors on why the battery capacity can drop:

  • Too high (> 35°C) or too low (< 10°C) operating temperature.
  • Drained down to 0% charge too many times.
  • Not storing it half-charged for a long-term (more than a week).

I'd been in the same situation where the battery capacity kept dropping and have written a utility app that pops up an alert on some of these conditions so we can avoid it. I thought it may be useful to share it here: link to GitHub.
