safari hangs (memory leak??) with Sierra

I recently updated everything and now Safari has suddenly started really hanging on Facebook and video heavy pages (especially news sites).  I used to be able to open a ton of tabs if I was going through and researching something - then reading all the tabs individually but now if I have 20 tabs open Safari gets incredibly slow and totally hangs, the longer it is open.  The other night I finally got a warning that the system had run out of application memory.  (force quitting Safari, which annoyed me because there were a bunch of stories I wanted to read open in tabs and I didn't want to find them again) fixed the issue for now.   But still get *very* slow performance on some Facebook pages and multimedia heavy pages.
