Black display, but can hear computer start up

I have a Macbook pro that is about 3 years old that has been working fine up until this point. A few days ago when I went to go use my mac I opened it to a black screen. No back lighting of lighting on the keyboard. It was not off, but I turned it off via the power button.You can hear the computer turn on but cannot see anything. Also the computer seems to not turn on unless plugged into power, and starting it in safe mood or recovery mood has also not worked. Once turned on the computer also seems unresponsive in that that the caps lock bottom will not light up when hit. Any one have any idea what is going on and how to fix it?
