Past TM backup cannot be repaired
Dear friends,
I am confronting a problem for which I cannot find a solution anywhere.
When I updated from El Capitan to OS Sierra, I decided to do a clean install. I also did a partition in my backup disk and kept the time machine backups. Before installing the new OS, I canceled the ongoing time machine backup, because it started creating a backup of macOS Sierra installation. I shut down, formatted the disk and installed a good clean version of the new OS.
The problem is that sometime in the process, I tracked and foolishly deleted a temporary folder in the Backups.backupdb of the past TM backups, which was the incomplete time machine backup I canceled. This action really messed the time machine which resulted the disk partition to be damaged.
Now, every time I turn on my iMac, I get a message "The disk "X" cannot be repaired" and of course I lost access to my backups. The good news is that there is another folder in this partition which is not damaged, which I can access in a limited time frame until the system unmounts the partition. This folder's files are not damaged. I suspect the deletion of the temp folder caused damage to the backups indexing.
Also another cool fact is that if I find an original file -and not an alias- in the maze of Backups.backupdb, the file is not damaged and can be copied to another location without any problems.
Until now, I have tried disk utility first aid, which cannot fix the partition. Any other suggestions ?
