AW3 + Workout for Runners: some suggestions

I am a semi-serious runner and long-time Garmin user who would love to switch to AW3 for my running watch needs. As far as I can tell, the hardware is great – solid GPS, beautiful clear display, etc. I have no problem with the shorter battery life. However, I have been very disappointed in the user experience in the Workout app, which doesn’t seem at all suited to what runners need. I have some specific suggestions -- simple stuff that can help make this the best running watch out there.

I need the watch for two types of workouts: regular running (including races, long runs, tempo runs, junk runs, etc) and track workouts. My feature needs for both types of workouts are very basic.

For regular running, I need:

  1. the ability to start and stop using the push of a single fail-proof button. Pushing both buttons at once while I’m sweaty and running hard is very error-prone. I was doing a tempo run this morning and found that my success rate was less than 50% when trying to push both buttons at once, and it’s frustrating in the middle of a hard run to find yourself on the main watch screen or in the applications blob.
  2. a clear display showing current pace, avg pace so far, and distance in big, easy-to-read digits. Heartrate would also be nice, but not if it takes up a lot of screen real estate. The current display is not optimal. First, I don’t like to waste 30% of my screen real estate on a big animated icon of a running person – this is distracting and takes up too much space. Second, you should be able to configure the size (and ideally color) of each metric independently. And heartrate shouldn’t take up a whole line, there has to be a way to display it more efficiently.
  3. not a must-have, but it’s nice to be able to auto-lap with user-configurable distance (typically 1/2 mile or 1 mile) and then see your avg pace for the current lap. The app seems to be configured to report every mile, but I find that the announcements disappear too quickly, and it would be great to have Avg Lap Pace as a metric.
  4. for racing especially, I like to know that the GPS is primed and ready before the race starts. Nothing is worse than being 100 meters into a 5K and you can already tell that your watch is acting wonky. Some kind of “5 bars” display would be very helpful.

For track workouts, it’s incredibly simple. I want just basic stopwatch functionality with a lap button (again, not two taps or pressing two buttons simultaneously) and a display that shows running lap time, not running total time. This is how the most basic Timex stopwatch works. The Workout app’s stopwatch features seem to be geared toward other purposes like countdown timers. If I am running a set of 10 x 400m sprints, I have to be able to check my watch at the 200m mark to see my split. I also need the ability to quickly review the history of laps – I cant seem to find this feature (without reviewing on my phone or computer).

Finally, during most runs/workouts, I will never want to see the apps blob, ask Siri something, or use Apple Pay. It would be great if there were a way to lock yourself into the app or otherwise make the app more fail-proof so that I can’t accidentally press the wrong button and find myself in the wrong screen or in a different app. This goes together with allowing the user to configure one button actions like start/stop and lap. You could use the swipe-left screen to access the apps blob or "unlock" the watch.

This watch is so close to being really solid for runners -- but right now it's a big disappointment for this use. Please add some features to Workout to fix these issues and make it awesome!

Thanks for your consideration.

By posting here, I was hoping that there were other people running with AW3 who could either point me to an app that works better than Workout, Nike Run Club, Strava, etc ... or who maybe had different experiences that they might want to add. The purpose of the forum, according to the front page is to "Find answers, ask questions, and connect with our community of Apple users from around the world." Maybe I turned people off by addressing my comments to Apple directly instead of posing questions.
