Restarting in Safe Mode

Hey everyone. Am fairly new to the community. I have a question if anyone had this problem lately. My MacBook kept restarting into safe mode and the caps key was not working, had to keep pressing on it to ensure it was on or off and now after a restart my computer screen display does not seem to come up. Another colleague of mines said she had the same problem and took it to the Apple Store and they said it was the new OS. Can anyone help in advising what I can do apart from taking it to the Apple Store as am no where close to one.

You can reinstall the macOS by recovery: command R.

this will leave your account files etc untouched, and refresh the macOS on top of your existing.

Also prudent to have a backup strategy in place:

How to create a boot clone

If the OS installs on the Mac, it will not be the cause of keyboard problems.

My experience is that on my 5 year old Macbook Pro, I lost the left Shift key, the left Option key, and the left Control key. I had to remap the control key to my capslock key to have a control key.

My point is that mechanical keyboard wear-out, so having a Shift key locked down, that might force the Mac to always boot into Safe mode, and a capslock key that does not function properly could just be a sign of old age.  Especially if the keyboard is subject to either hard finger action, or liquids, or food crumbs, etc...

I have been using a new Macbook Pro since last December, as I could not longer deal with my broken keyboard, and it had been 5 years, so I was due a new toy.

Hi BlueHeronJets,

Thank you for reaching out to the Apple Discussion Community.  May I suggest:

Try plugging in an external keyboard.  You did not tell us if you are using a laptop Mac or not.  Perhaps you can borrow a keyboard from a friend.

Try powering down your Mac, then inverting the keyboard and giving it a few gentle taps.  Foreign objects near or under the keys sometimes can be dislodged in this way.  Still could cause you problems, but you will gain information.  Similar results can be obtained using compressed air to clean your keyboard, especially when inverted.

You did not tell us how old your Mac is.  Keyboards wear out, as other responders have advised.

Check this HT from Apple Support to see if it may apply to your situation.
