Water damage on apple watch series 3?

If you accidentally go for a swim in a pool with apple watch series 3 without first turning on water lock or starting a swim workout does it damage it's water resistance? I'm under the assumption that since it's water resistant and not subjected to deep sea diving or high velocity water sports it would be fine as long as I eject the water after the accidental submersion. Can anyone confirm this?
