My 1st gen watch will not charge.

When on the charger the screen shows the "low battery on charger" icon (green),

... but it flashes on and off and won't recharge.  I had misplaced my watch, so it went uncharged for a few weeks and was completely dead. I have tried a different charging cord and plug. I am not able to restart by holding both of the buttons.  Can the battery be replaced without having to replace the whole watch?
