WD MyCloud Won't Retrieve Old Files
First time poster here. I gave my parents a WD MyCloud a couple years ago so that they wouldn't have to worry about backing up their files, that it would be done automatically. I set up the drive to my network and configured it to TimeMachine. Everything was fine for a couple of years. As far as I knew, the files and pictures they held dear were backing up. Eventually, as with all electronics, their iMac of 5+ years stopped booting up. Note that this computer was so old that it couldn't update to the latest OS of the time, and we can't recall which OS that was. It might have been as old as Snow Leopard, maybe Lion.
Fast forward to the present. My parents bought a brand-new iMac with Retina 5k display, 27-inch, all the bells and whistles. Not being very tech savvy, they used Geek Squad to set up their new computer. In reality, all they really wanted was to get their old files and pictures from TimeMachine onto this new behemoth. Unfortunately, the Geek Squad guy was unsuccessful at retrieving that data. I've been trying to find that data myself, because that's what TimeMachine does, right? It holds snapshots of a Mac at various time intervals? I am also having no luck finding those files. What's interesting is that the MacHD icon, which is where most of the files and pictures lived, is not visible ANYWHERE. When I tried using TimeMachine to back up their computer it only went as far as their installation date with the Geek Squad back in September.
Does anyone know how to retrieve data from an OS that old? I refuse to accept that it's gone forever. It's causing a fair amount of frustration for my family, and that's the last thing I wanted for them.
I'm afraid to use the macOS recovery utility (upon computer boot-up) because there are some new files that I don't want them to lose either. Should I try to copy the new files to a flash drive and use the utility? Another option I'm considering is getting a virtual machine with a really old macOS, say Panther, and then trying to use that utility to recover data from early in the summer when their old computer was working.
Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobis, you're my only hope!
Time Machine does not support any NAS device other than the Apple Time Capsule. It may work, but it's not a good idea.
That said, can you see anything on the drive at all?
