Calendar and iTunes sync in High Sierra

Since upgrading to High Sierra, the Calendar app on my MacBook Pro has become compromised. Firstly, trying to sync with my iPhone 6 through iTunes with a cable was not reliable, so I tried to upload Calendar data to the iCloud, and lost everything. Recovering from Time Machine, I then found iCloud created many duplicates of calendars so it was almost impossible to use Calendar. None of this copied across to my iPhone.

Removing many calendars seemed a good solution, but then I discovered that the calendars that iTunes was trying to use to sync with my iPhone (back to the cable solution, and disabling iCloud) were not the same calendars as I have open in the Calendar app on my MacBook.

How can I change iTunes to find the right calendars from the Calendar app so I can try to sync the right information with my iPhone?

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the sync role from iTunes and provide it as a stand-alone program?
