27" 2017 iMac retina dual monitor hookup

hello-

just got the new 27" iMac... tried hooking it up via target display to my 2010 iMac I'm replacing- no luck... bought a mini dv to thunderbolt adaptor...dosent detect

at the point where I will give my 2010 iMac to a friend and buy a new monitor..anyone know of any that will work with it?

is it even possible to have a second monitor connected?

If you want to use the 2010 27" iMac as a secondary display to the 5k 2017 iMac then I found a solution:   (even though Apple Tech Support said it was not possible).  You need this cable:

I'm in dual display heaven now.  Palettes and reference assets on one side, work space on the other.
