Restore MacBook Pro

I'm trying to restore my MacBook Pro.  I'm going to give this computer to a family member and have erased the hard drive, and I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS X.  After opening the Mac OS X Utilities using Command+R or Alt+Command+R, I have selected "Reinstall Mac OS X".  This brings up the Mac OS X Installation window, I select "Continue".  I get a window about verifying my computers eligibility, I select "Continue".  Then, I receive an error that says "An error occurred while preparing the installation.  Try running this application again".  Which I try again and get the same error.
