iTunes will not recognize 1st gen Apple TV?

Why will iTunes no longer list my ( 1st generation) Apple TV in the devices list?

iTunes is able to use Apple TV to connect to and utilize my home theatre speakers.

Apple TV is able to connect to my local WiFi network and download content including the software operating system update ( necessary after doing a "factory reset" on the Apple TV)

My iMac facilitates all this, i.e.. Apple TV is a fully recognized, fully functional network device.

Again, "why cannot iTunes, whose basic function is to do just this, show the Apple TV in the network devices list?"

My iPad is recognized, why not my Apple TV?

All the pertinent software is up to date. I fear it may be possible that it was the last iTunes update which caused the failure as I have had little previous trouble prior to this update.

I could, I suppose, purchase the new Apple TV but apparently iTunes has some difficulty there as well.

I have read and in many cases tried fixes suggested in earlier posts w.r.t. iTunes and Apple TV.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, even just to point out the relevant post.
