Connecting L&G Ultrafine 4K display to MacPro

The L&G 4K display cable has a thunderbolt 3 plug  and the MacPro has a thunderbolt 2 socket so the two are incompatible. I have just bought two thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adaptors but this does not solve my problem because the adaptor is thunderbolt 3 male connector and thunder bolt 2 socket connector  what I really needed was a thunderbolt 3 socket and a thunderbolt 2 plug.  I now need to buy additional cables which have two male thunderbolt 2 connectors --- is this correct ?? Its already cost me £100 for the adaptors and I don't want to spend any more, is there another solution out there that works please?

About Thunderbolt ports and displays - Apple Support

the adaptor you need is bought from Amazon, its a pita but doable.

For what its worth this Apple article Use the LG UltraFine 4K Display with your Mac - Apple Support says it is not going to be compatible with your Mac Pro.

According to this discussion LG UltraFine 4k to Mac Pro 6,1 ? | MacRumors Forums they also say it will not work unless your Mac has native built-in USB-C support. Clearly the Mac Pro 2013 does not have built-in USB-C.

Apparently the LG Ultrafine 5K monitor can be connected to a Mac Pro 2013 via the Apple Thunderbolt3 to Thunderbolt2 adapter. This obviously does not help you. Remember this is a different monitor so do not presume this means the 4K model should work. Reports say the 5K can work but the 4K cannot.

Ironically it is possible to get a genuine USB-C PCIe interface card for the classic Mac Pro e.g. https://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegro-usbc-pcie it would be interesting to see if that had more chance of working.

Hi John,   My question is about a MacPro 2017 which I have on loan, not the macbook pro Apple have put in the footer of my question, sorry I should have been a little more explicit so the question still stands.

Sorry about the duplicate replies, there was a problem with the support community system earlier.

Yes my reply was about the Mac Pro desktop, there is no 2017 model it is exactly the same model as was launched in 2013. It may have been bought this year but officially it is a 2013 model as such it still does not have USB-C built-in.

So my answer stands, according to the Apple article and the discussion, and other posts I have seen it is not possible to connect to your Mac Pro.

If you had a MacBook Pro 2017 laptop then it would be no problem at all.
