change my @me.com iCloud to my store id @gmail.com

I realize this has been discussed ad nauseum but... I still have questions. I wanted to change my iCloud ID and password to my Apple ID. I currently have a me.com email and my regular Apple ID is gmail.com. I went to change it, then when I clicked on the Mail slider it told me I had to set up an iCloud.com email. I still want my me.com email. I don't really want the two IDs, although they have the same password. I'm constantly getting the 2 step verification on some device or another, but it always asks me the gmail.com one. The gmail.com ID was really only for the store. Since I couldn't make the store ID the me.com ID.

Ugh, Apple IDs always something...
