Moving iTunes library to removable media

I would like to replace my aging Mac Pro with my 2016 MacBook Pro running High Sierra.  The only obstacle is storage, as I have a large iTunes library.

When my MacBook and I are not at home, we're almost always working, so I really don't need my iTunes library.  I have what I need on my iOS devices.  So rather than lugging around an external storage device, I would like to move my iTunes library to removable media that stays at home.  However, I'm not sure how iTunes (which won't be running - at least in the foreground) will like not finding its library.

I could probably use separate accounts on the MacBook, but that would would be more of a hassle.  Any suggestions?
