itunes cannot read the contents of the iPad

I get a message when i plug my iPad into my computer "itunes cannot read the contents of the iPad."  Everytime I plug in the iPad USB to the computer it gives me a message to" restore to factory settings."  I have never plugged in the iPad to my computer and have things on it I do not want lost.  I do not want to restore to factory settings and loose my apps and photos.  What should I do if the iPad will not connect to my computer?
