Change screen area/position?

Hi,

Looking for some help, I'm currently running my Mac through a 42" tv which is proving far too big as desktop display and the top of the screen sits far too high. I do not want to change the TV or move to a smaller monitor as it doubles as our second tv in the spare room.

What I am hoping to achieve is to able to change the screen area/margins to lower it at the least while maintaining a high resolution at 1080, I can get the screen size I desire by dropping to 720 out of my mac but this has obvious disadvantages.

what would be even better is if I could have my mac treats the TV as two displays splitting the screen area down the middle but I assume thats not possible.

Any help would be appreciated!
