About processor upgrade

Hello, I have an iMac4,1:

• Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
• Memory: 2 GB MHz DDR2 SDRAM (originally: 1GB)
• OS: Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (originally: Tiger)

As you see I did the upgrade for Memory and OS X. I want a newer OS X so I need a newer processor, otherwise I cannot install a newer OS X so these are my two questions:

1. If I install an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, what is the newest version of OS X I can install?
2. I have a HP Desktop computer with Windows Server 2012, it has an Inter Core 2 Duo processor, is that processor compatible with my iMac? Can I use it?

iMacs do not have interchangeable processors.

You are already using the latest OS X version for your model iMac. CPU upgrades are not possible. Many more extensive hardware differences than the CPU itself preclude installing any later operating system.

That iMac will run Snow Leopard perfectly well. Enjoy it for what it is.

Considering the age of the computer and now that you know the CPU is not upgradeable, I would suggest getting a more up-to-date Mac. You can find Apple refurbished Macs on their website where you will get more up-to-date machines that are identical to new machines, come with  the same 1 year warranty and are eligible for AppleCare. They can also save you hundreds of $.

If you are in the USA, you can find the refurbished web page by navigating to www.apple.com, go to the bottom of the pate and then click Refurbished and Clearance. You may be a good candidate for a Mac Mini or an entry iMac depending on your needs.

Mac OS can only be installed on Mac hardware.
