moving Time Capsule backup to another drive pro...
Hello all. I have a 2013 last-gen Time Capsule with a 4TB drive (previously, I'd swapped out the old 2TB drive). It is now getting pretty full of backups, so I bought an 8TB drive to put in it.
After dismantling the TC and mounting the drive via USB on my Mac, it doesn't seem to have the regular folders I can copy over. Disk Utility shows the drive having 3 partitions:
APswap (1.07GB)
APconfig (1.07GB)
TimeMachine (4TB)
...which is odd because the drive only has 4TB. Anyway, the TimeMachine partition (where the backups live) just has a folder called ShareRoot, and inside that folder is the Sparse Disk Image Bundle file where all the backups are.
Any ideas what to copy to the new hard drive, so I can continue using an interrupted backup? Thanks!!
They are digital bytes.. and meaningless.. a 4TB disk is usually around 4004GB .. so losing 2GB in the APswap and APconfig is no biggie.
You put your new drive in the TC and erase it.. when you erase a drive it will create all the partitions .. two used internally and the user space normally called Data.
You copy the sparsebundle from your old disk to the new disk on the TC.. but warning.. it is very unlikely to work if you use sierra and later. In fact even el capo might have issues.. Apple increased the security on sierra and it is likely to be unrecognised by time machine no matter how you copy it.
LaPastenague is the Time Capsule expert on this forum, since he spends a good deal of his time inside the products.
Until he responds, I'll offer a few thoughts, which may be worth about as much as you paid to view this web page.
1) I'm not sure if the firmware on the Time Capsule will support any drives larger than 4 TB, so that may or may not be an issue here. LaPastenague, who knows how to get into the firmware of the Time Capsule, may have some ideas about this.
2) In theory, you should be able to copy only the sparsebundle file from the old drive to the new drive.....but....and this is a big BUT.....it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to continue backups to that same file. Instead, Time Machine will very likely create a new sparsebundle file and start all over again with a new complete back up of your Mac, and then move forward with incremental backups.
You might be able to view the old backups though, and possibly restore a file back to your Mac.....if you use the Browse Other Backup Disks option in Time Machine to see if the old backups will appear.
Wait for LaPastenague to answer though. He is the expert.
Edit.....I see that LaPastenague has already replied, so I will step aside.
Not sure if you caught the info that Ian Williams5 was planning to install an 8 TB drive in the Time Capsule.
so I bought an 8TB drive to put in it.
I think we posted at the same time.

It can handle drives up to 8TB.. I have seen reports although I have not done it myself.
But the drive cannot be the special seagate backup drive.. those I think will not work.. They use a special compression system and are not truly 8TB.
The bigger the drive the more you lose if the drive breaks down.. so be very careful with drives larger than 4TB which IMHO is safe max.
Also note if the disk has higher power consumption .. even higher startup disk spinup current your power supply is going to suffer.. the later supplies are better but still very limited power supply and are running near or over capacity at spinup.
and this is a big BUT.....it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to continue backups to that same file
We see this all the time.. it is not easy to get TM (since Sierra especially) to continue to use older backup if it has been moved.
