upgrade to os x 10.10

I currently have 13 inch mid 2012 macbook pro with OS X 10.8.5 (12F2560) and 4GB memory. I am trying to install microsoft office 2016 but I keep getting a response that I need OS X 10.10 or higher. I have checked for updates and it states my mac is up to date. I have tried downloading High Sierra but it will not download. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
