Keyboard(s) not working in Yosemite after upgrade

I am a Mac consultant and I am seeing this issue with MOST users who upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) on their iMacs. This includes current models. The Apple Extended keyboard (wired) AND the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard AND third party keyboards have major problems with some-or-all keys conking out. In Safari keys work for awhile and then randomly stop responding. Filling out forms online is extremely problematic. The command key frequently conks out. Cut, Copy, Paste using the keyboard do not work at all. Keys can stop working even in the Finder. In some applications no keys functions at all. Quicken 2007 (latest update), for example. Resetting the PRAM has no effect. Sometimes clicking OFF the keyboard control panel options and then turning them on again cure the issue... but only for awhile. Restarting the computer has no beneficial effect. As you can imagine, end users are frustrated as their computers become unusable. I need a solution that works and "sticks" or I will have to retrograde these machines to Mavericks. Any great ideas out there?

Our school has the same issue. Very frustrating.

try and connect the same keyboard ( bluettoh mouse is out here) through a USB hub... no idea why, but this works.

Hi Requestioneer, that seemed to do the trick. Thank you. The keyboards are working again now with USB hubs attached. Very strange though. I called AppleCare about the issue yesterday and they couldn't understand what was wrong. Hopefully it's a software issue that can be fixes, the sooner the better.

Thanks For this idea. I tried it for one user and it didn't help him. But it seems that creating a new user account on his computer gets his keyboard working again. That seems to indicate that something in the new system might be conflicting with a cache file or preference file or something generated in user accounts. Of course, creating a new account is not a practicle solution to this widespread problem.

I totally agree Philip. Our suite has 20 iMacs. There are four year groups studying the subject. Each station has at least 12 user accounts. It would be an absolute nightmare to manually reconfigure every account. This morning another 2 keyboards have stopped responding. I'm running out of USB hubs/extenders! I hope Apple are reading these discussion forums. There's no way this can be a hardware glitch. It has to be software related and it needs fixed. Out of curiosity have you attempted resetting SMC and PRAM as listed here: Re: Yostemite kills Apple wired keyboard. That might help you.

This most certainly is UEFI ( hardware abstraction "software" layer) related and affects all devices that exist in ACPI abstraction, such as ps2 or serial imput versions of legacy kernels and as apple patched theirs in there as well for original apple keyboards.

The fact that hgeneric keyboards do not work either points to the power management being a problem, partially working keyboards still work under standby voltage ( reduced) as i do have to guess ( too lay to check the sleep state finetuning details, but i would bet yosemite has sleep states for peripheral devices as well).

An initial shot in the dark where issues in emulation of 16 bit input if ram optimisation and energy saving updates interfered, this could apply for both total miss and partial keyboard failures in which some keys do work and some do not with the issue getting always worse and not better in the same session.

As per now i do believe that this and a generic kernel design interfering with energy optimisation does cause this, once a external peripheral such as a hub is connected to route these input devices as usb and not legacy devices and loads the kext for usb input devices these will not match the default profile any more and the hub be recognized as nonstandard yet always active part of the pci bus and not be affected by said energy saving settings.

Keyboard Doesn’t Work

Keyboard Keys Do Not Respond

I found something near the end of an Apple Support article that finally helped me fix the problem for myself. It's OS X Yosemite: If keys on your keyboard don’t work. There's one option about slow keys being enabled.

"Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized."

The problem was fixed when I turned off Slow Keys. I never turned on Slow Keys in Mavericks or Yosemite, so I'm wondering what happened in the upgrade to do so. I hope this helps others.

In my case, what worked is: "System Preference" from the Apple Menu > "Accessibility" > "Mouse and Trackpad" and deactivate "Enable Mouse Keys". What seems to be the cause is Adobe Premiere. For some reason it activates the "Enable Mouse Keys" when I edit video in Premiere. So once in a while the extended keyboard stops working and this is the fix. All started in Yosemite.

HI,

After going thru all the remedies, which didn't work for me . i finally found out what was causing for my wired keyboard not to function

as normal.

Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES —> Keyboard —-> UNCHECK/Unselect "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as Standard function Keys"

Cheers,

Senthil

I find it remarkable that after upgrading to the "premier" OS yet, easy things simply don't work anymore...

I have tried all of the remedies stated for the inoperative wired keyboard, and NONE of them work.  All of the keys on the keyboard work except for the 10-key...  Does anyone have another solution, or is there an apple tech that can genuinely fix the issue?  This is clearly an issue with the software since the keyboard worked right up till the moment I upgraded to Yosemite...  Clearly the reason why so many people don't upgrade often.

I truly can't understand why this is an issue that has to be address in a forum when it is CLEARLY a software issue, and has been known for quite some time...?

Martin,

Did you ever figure out a solution? I'm having this same issue and none of the other remedies are working for me either. Thanks in advance.
