iCloud background sync

Hello,

I've recently moved all my document synchronization (iPad-iPhone-macbook) from Dropbox to iCloud due to lack of support of Dropbox with .rtfd file format (in iPad preview). It's around 300 GB of documents. I moved all the documents to the "Documents" folder of the iCloud and let it sync overnight. At morning i saw that it didn't sync all of the data (only around 1.5 GB, which was around the amount of data synced before I left it overnight). From what i assumed and read online is that it wasn't background syncing (the MacBook was on, connected to power and with available internet connection).

My questions:

  1. What are the conditions for the iCloud on mac to sync with the server? does the "Document" folder need to be open? where can I see the conditions for sync process to start?
  2. How can I set it to background sync always? meaning, I want that the iCloud service on my mac will have high priority to push\pull from the iCloud server the latest documents (basically, working in background)

Thank you in advance.
