Move iTunes to Flash Drive w/ out Duplicating F...
I'd like to move my iTunes library to a flash / usb drive to free up some disk space on my laptop. I currently have my media files in folders named as such (below) and am pointing iTunes to the c:\MyName\Music directory in Edit\Preferences.
c:\MyName\Music
c:\MyName\Music\Podcasts - There are subfolders for each podcast that I have downloaded
c:\MyName\Music\Books - there are some subfolders as well as some PDF's in this folder
c:\MyName\Music\Voice Memos - there are some individual files in this folder
c:\MyName\Music\Mobile Applications\ - there are hundreds of apps in this folder
c:\MayName\Music\Music - there are hundreds of subfolders inside this folder for each artist
I just copied and pasted the entire c:\MyName\Music folder to a flash drive. No problem. Then I changed the location of my iTunes library in Edit\Preferences to be \\FlashDrive\Music. So the entire structure above was copied in tact to the flash drive.
Then I told iTunes to consolidate and reorganize my library. When that was done I had:
- The Podcasts folder inside my \Music\Music folder and off on its own.
- Duplicates of every single artist\album\song inside a new Music folder; so now it is \\FlashDrive\music\music\music.
I obviously don't want the duplicates of anything; I'd labored in the past to get things organized both manually and with the help of iTunes. So I blew that away completely and reverted back to the library on my hard drive. But I'd like to make the move still, just without all of the duplicates.
1. What did I do wrong, or what could I have done differently to not have duplicated everything.
2. What other considerations should I be aware of before doing this? For example, it seems like I now need to backup my media on a second flash drive.
3. Why does iTunes not seem to care about my apps and books? It didn't try to move them at all.
4. Assuming that I have the folder structure described above, what should value should I use in the Edit\Preferences (Advanced) part of iTunes?
See this thread:
Itunes and external hard drive
See Make a split library portable for background on moving the library around, and Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for steps to back it up from one drive to another efficiently. Changing the media folder location under Edit > Preferences > Advanced tells iTunes where to put new media, but won't correct paths for items you've moved by hand.
iTunes 12.7 has dropped support for managing apps, iBooks and tones. You may wish to keep an archive of your old apps but when restoring a backup these are now pulled directly from the app store over Wi-Fi. See Changes in the new iTunes - Apple Support for more.
