High Sierra installation problem

While High Sierra was installing on my iMac it seemed to stall, indicating that 45 minutes were left, however after another hour it still indicated that 45 minutes were left for installation, so I shut down the computer.  When I turned the iMac back on I got a message that that an error had occurred but each time I signed back on to the computer, it re-started and the same message came back on the screen.  Like going around in circles with no solution to the problem.  Any ideas?

Restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally. Then re-attempt your HS installation. If the problem persists please follow the directions below:

Thank you very much for your reply and instructions, which I think would have solved my problem; however, I contacted Apple support directly and I was talked-through how to re-install my High Sierra, which got me back on track.  All is well now.  Thanks again for your kind reply.
