OS Sierra deleted email does not go to trash, j...

I have a new iMac that runs OS Sierra 10.12.5.  Sometimes when I delete an e-mail it shows up in my trash folder like it's supposed to.  Sometimes it just disappears forever.  Sometimes it disappears but when I check later it has reappeared in the trash folder.  How can I make e-mail stop disappearing temporarily or forever?  I'd like deleted e-mail to stay in the trash folder until I empty it, in case I change my mind about deleting it.

Try rebuilding the mailbox.

If that doesn't work, try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Reindex messages        For El Capitan, try looking in V3.  Sierra use V4. High Sierra use V5.
