Mail App keeps freezing

Mac Mail v10.3 (latest) keeps freezing on both my 2013 MacBook Pro and 2017 iMac, both running OSX 10.12.6 (latest).  It happens >once a day, and I have to Force Quit then re-start Mail (the message I'm composing usually gets lost).  This has been going on for many months, before the latest OS upgrade.  It's infuriating.  What's the solution?  (Apart from "not use Mac Mail").  Thanks.
