Hi guys,

Because of wi-fi issues in my house, I connect to the internet through an ethernet cable (AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet 2 adapter). I installed the drivers from the manufacturer's website and it's been working perfectly.

My problem is that I've bought a VIA Labs multiport hub (three ports; USB 3.1, HDMI and USB-C) which plugs into the only (USB-C) port on my Macbook so that I can use a mouse/USB/etc. when I need to.

My issue is this; I try to connect 1. an ethernet cable, to 2. the USB/Ethernet adapter, which I then try to connect to 3. the Multiport hub, which then connects to 4. my Macbook. I'm trying to do this so that I can use a wireless mouse, while I'm connected to the internet via the ethernet cable. The problem is, it doesn't work; when I look at the System Report, it shows me the multiport hub, and the mouse's USB receiver I have plugged in, but not the ethernet cable.

Sorry if my situation/issue isn't well explained, but can anyone tell me if I'm missing something (drivers or whatnot), or if it's not actually possible to plug an ethernet adater to a macbook through a hub like this.

If it's relevant, I'm using a 12" early 2015 Macbook w/ 10.10.5 Yosemite OS X; if I'm missing any important information on the  the Adapter, Multiport hub or ethernet cable which is relevant, I can try and find it. Likewise, if any part of my post is unclear, I can try and clarify.

You just can't use an ethernet adapter to a macbook through a hub.

Ah, that's a nuisance. I've seen that Apple sell hubs which have a port for an Ethernet cable, as well as USB(s); I'd put off buying one because there's no Apple store nearby so it means ordering it and they're a little expensive, but I'll probably have to since I really do need access to a USB port whilst I'm on the internet, if it's not physically possible to achieve this with the components I have on hand.
