Remove unwanted breaks, tabs, etc. in plain text?

A lot of text has extra breaks, tabs, etc. How do I get rid of this? I've tried find-and-replace, but Textedit's doesn't seem to work with these, and with replacing tabs with nothing.

BBEdit works well with white spaces. It’s in the App Store.
