iMac 20" mid2008 gets stuck, freezes and refuse...

Dear all,

Hope you are all well.

I have a second hand imac 20" mid 2008, Intel Pentium Dual Core 2,66.

The previous owner, a friend of mine, upgraded to a 4gb RAM (two 2gb) and also upgraded the Airport card and did a clean install of Sierra.

On test everything seemed fine.

From day 2 problems started.

At first it froze while in safari if I attempted to open a third tab. Complete freeze with spinning wheel. I had to force shut down every time as nothing else would work.

Going through discussions here I booted in recovery and safe mode, repaired disk permissions, did P-RAM, fsky etc. I also downloaded SMC fan control andthe truth is it never warmed up on me again beyond 40-42 degrees.

No matter what I did it would keep on freezing. So, in the end I used disk utilities to downgrade to Yosemite from my MacBook's time machine. At first everything looked fine and I was really happy with the end result, until the nightmare begun all over again and now I find myself at a crossroads that won't even let me boot it in safe mode. Turns on, chime comes on, loading bar starts loading but it will freeze halfway and that's it. Force shut down is my only choice at that point...But then again, how many of them can one do???

Please help!!!!

I am not a heavy gamer. My main occupations would be text editing, spreadsheets, internet browsing and for recreation video viewing.

How much money should one spend on an old piece of machinery to make it functional???

It did occur my mind that one of the RAMs might be bad or corrupted and maybe I should consider changing it.

Please help!!!!

My first suspicion is the upgraded RAM. Macs are picky about RAM and the so-called "bargain" or "value" RAM" that some RAM companies foist on Mac owners too often fails to work. What brand is the new RAM? The only trusted vendors for the majority of senior contributors here are Crucial and Other World Computing. Most other brands are suspect.

PNY used to be great in Macs until l2006 when Apple moved to Intel processors; then it starting causing trouble. Kingston and Corsair are companies with two price tiers for RAM, the lower-priced ones being the troublesome ones in Macs. To get their premium RAM you usually have to order from the manufacturer itself, not the resellers. RAM is a very price-sensitive item and most RAM resellers do not stock the more expensive option if there are two tiers of quality.

Do you have the original RAM modules? If so, reinstall them and see if the computer works.
