Formatting issues on a Western Digital external...

My older Western Digital Passport 1TB shot craps, so purchased a new one of the same size (newer 2016 version).

I've used Disk Utility to format the drive for Mac, and SuperDuper! to clone my HD over to the WD travel drive.

All well, until I plugged it into my laptop.

All my folders have a red circle with a minus-sign. A command+i shows that I do not have access.

Never had this issue on any prior travel drives. My first thought is "operator error", so I repeated the process. Got the same results.

Thinking I will try the cloning with Carbon Copy Cloner to see if there is a better outcome, but wanted to throw it out to the Forum to see if anyone could point out something I'm missing.

I am running 10.12.6

Select wadcorp, choose Get Info from the File menu, open Sharing & Permission, give yourself Read & Write access, and apply that to the enclosed items.

How do you use this "travel drive"? In the Finder, do "Get Info" on the drive. Is the button "Ignore ownership on this volume" checked? Normally, external drives have ignore ownership turned on and anyone can write to them. If yours is turned off, that may explain what you are seeing. What happens if you try to boot from the external?

Appreciate the reply, but I'm being dense. Select "wadcorp"?

I've clicked on the WD drive & done the Get Info > File Menu > Sharing & Permissions thing, but no luck there.

I have booted from the WD drive & while slow, I can access things.

Okay. All working now.

I did click on "Ignore ownership on this volume", but didn't also indicate to "Apply to enclosed items".

After that, then ejecting & remounting the drive, I'm good as gold.
