Even when connected to WiFi, my MBP reports "Wi...

I connect to the net and printers via an Arris Panoramic modem.  Works great.  I connect just fine to both 2.4 and 5 GHz signals.

However, when I click on the menu-bar wifi icon, it reports those solid connections but also, in a flashing signal, "Wifi: Looking for networks..."  Seems a contradiction.  What's up with that?

That is normal. When you click on that icon in the menu bar one possibility is that you are doing it because you want to switch to another network. Therefore it automatically scans to update the list of available networks.
