How Do I properly disconnect by Lacie back up system?

Eject the drive; turn off the power; unplug the cable to the computer.

How do I eject the drive?

Select the drive's Desktop icon. CTRL- or RIGHT-click to open the context menu and select Eject. Or drag the icon into the Trash which will change to an Eject symbol.
