External Drives disappear after sleep

I have a mac mini, running Sierra, and 2 drive external disk cradle attached. when my mac sleeps for more than an hour or so, the external drives disappear from the system. they do not just unmount, they litteraly are completly gone, not listed in disk utility or under /dev directory, so I cannot just remount them. I have to shutdown and restart to get them to reappear.

Is anyone else having this issue? It's extremely frustrating.
