connecting mbpro 11,1 to HDMI out?

I have a MacBook Pro 11,1 (Mid 2014 Retina Display). It has an HDMI output jack; When I plug an HDMI cable into it and connect to HDMI input on my monitor, the monitor sees "no signal". AND, the MBPro does not seem to see the external monitor, not allowing me to select external monitor options.

How to fix this on the MBPro?
