Why don’t steps count as standing?

I work at a side job where I can’t wear my watch on my wrist, so I put it in my pocket while on shift. The watch still continues to count my total number of steps the whole time. Strangely, it sometimes counts these hours as Stand hours, but most of the time it doesn’t. Does anyone know what’s going on here? Also, how difficult would it be to get Apple to notice this and count x number of steps in an hour as a stand point? It’s seems like walking involves standing, right?

When the Apple Watch is not in contact with your skin it shuts off.  I am surprised that it registers movement at all.

I have a friend who has the same problem.  She got around it by buying a watch band that is really big and wearing her watch on her ankle while she is at work.  It works for her!
