What can I do if my mac won't log in?

My computer shut off when the battery ran out. Then when I charged it up and tried logging on it would get stuck at the screen in the picture. Not sure what to do? Will I be able to salvage any data? I have tried booting through safe mode but it gets stuck. I haven't tried erasing any of the hard drives.

You should try to boot up in single user mode and use the command line to copy over your important data.  [ In the future, back up your data or/and use time machine. ]
