Can't get email to start on new iphone 4s

Can't get email to start on new iphone 4s - stuck on the 'Welcome to Mail' screen, when I click on Google and enter my account details, then Next, it tells me 'This Gmail account has already been added to your iPhone.' Similarly for icloud. But that's all it lets me do. Help please



You might want to try force-closing the Mail app and resetting your phone.  To do this, double-tap the Home button, locate Mail and swipe up on the preview image to close it, then tap the Home button again.  Then hold the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.  After it restarts try adding the account again.



Thanks for advice Randers4 but I've now tried that a few times with both email accounts. It still goes through the 'verifying' process then tells me the account is already added. It isn't a problem of adding an account, it's getting to use it.



When you go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars on your phone, do you see the Gmail account listed under Accounts?

 

If it is, when you open the Mail app on your phone do you see it listed there?



Yes the Gmail account is listed.

When I open the Mail app it only shows the Welcome to Mail page with a list of email providers below.



Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your Gmail account, then tap Delete Account.  Then try adding it again.



Instead I went to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tapped the Gmail account and found that the Mail button was switched off. Duh.

You're welcome. Glad you found the problem.



Go to Settings -> Mail -> Accounts -> Gmail

and enable the mail app

restart the mail app and it will be working properly
