iPad display suddenly too dim

The display on my iPad Air (first gen) has suddenly become very dim.  At max brightness, it's only about half as bright as my older iPad 3 (the last iPad to use the 30 pin connector).

This pic was taken outside at a park.  It's daytime but overcast and I'm in an exercise area that is covered by a canopy.  It's almost impossible to see even at maximum brightness.

I've tried a full backup and restore, with no change.  That makes this iPad pretty much useless except in a darkened room.

Is there anything else I can do to try to "reset" the iPad's display settings?

How to brighten the screen usually goes dim after iOS update

it seems like you already tried option one

-go to settings

-turn off auto brightness

-raise your brightness level

Option 2

-Go to settings

-Tap on general tab

-Tap on Accessibility tab

-Choose Display Accommodations on iOS 10 or Increase contrast  on iOS 9

-Turn off "Reduce White Point"

Option 3

-Go to settings

-Tap on general tab

-Tap on Accessibility tab

- Choose Zoom

-Turn off Zoom

Option 4 (If nothing else worked above)

-Go to settings

-tap on general tab

-tap on Reset tab

-Tap on Reset All Settings

-Confirm and reset

Options 2 or 3 should fix your brightness issues.
