changed username and now lost files

I have managed to lose all the files on my wife's laptop through changing her name.

through system preferences / users & groups i right clicked on the admin username and selected 'advanced options', in here i changed the 'account name', 'full name', 'home directory' & 'appleID' from my wife's maiden name to married name.  The laptop restarted and went through the initial set up again.

Now its like the laptop has been reset to factory default, although the other user is set up on the laptop.

Is there a way to recover all of her desktop files / photos etc?  assuming that none of this has been overwritten.

I dont want to change anything back until i know the ramifications.
