macOS Sierra: Finder not responding

Hey,

I am running a Late 2011 MacBook Pro with macOS Sierra (10.12) running. This is a fresh install of the system. Its an i7, 8gb ram, and running a 512 SSD.

The system runs really well, but now and then Finder completely freezes up with many applications refusing to start. When I try to force quit them, everything except the Finder can be quit. Upon trying to relaunch Finder, it simply crashes, and goes into a Not Responding loop.

Another odd thing I saw is that Photos.app now says "Closing library" or something to that effect. Not able to reproduce every single time, but it happens now and then.

My doubts are on my oneDrive syncs running perhaps at the time? - I have both a personal and business account running on them at this time. Apart from, the only other cloud service is iCloud (with iCloud Drive working with the new Desktop and Documents functionality).

At this point, I have had to hard reset the computer to get it running again.

Hello,

calling the support they told me to reset the SMC.

After that the problem didn't appear any more since yesterday evening. Hope the problem will stay away.

Regards,
Thomas

I have the same issue with Finder on my Late 2009 iMac after upgrading to MacOS Sierra. When I double click on any folder or on Finder, I get the "beachball", Finder becomes "non responsive", and when I try to relaunch Finder, nothing happens. I can't get Finder back up and running. The only solution is to reboot. And frankly, I'm getting tired of rebooting five times a day. I think this usually happens when I'm running Safari. Not sure if this is one of the reasons Finder is crashing. I already tried re-installing Sierra with no luck.

hai,

I'm using MacBook pro late 2010, first time i installed the sierra it install good, but after boot in to desktop it start freezing the window continuously, then after some reboots the os crashed, no fonts are appeared, even no wallpaper can be displayed, a blue colour screen is appear, when i try to open any app it start freezing, i won't able to shutdown my mac. then open activity monitor and force quit the finder window then it finally shutdown after 30-50 min of waiting. then i boot again and open app store and download sierra again, and install it, same problem continues, plz apple give some fix for it, trackpad guesters are not working, don't gain a bad comment for a good product apple. plz fix it immediately.

I have more or less same issue. Common symptoms that I am facing.

  1. Finder is freezes and taking enormous time to bring a pop, when I am trying to attachment a file (even if it is a drag drop) from any email client.
  2. Same behaviour when I am trying to opening a file from any application.
  3. When I am dragging a file from one finder tab to another, it is freezing and taking time to make the action.
  4. While deleting and moving file one folder to another.
  5. Taking time to show directory listing in a finder.

Thanking you in advance, if you know the solution.

I tried the suggestion of booting in safe mode, then rebooting again in normal mode. I am still having the issues described in this post:

  • Beachballs when trying to do anything with Finder
  • Dragging files from one folder to another, from Photos to Finder, from Finder into a web app (e.g. Google Drive)
  • Finder will not relaunch after it becomes unresponsive
  • All my desktop folders, drives and aliases disappear
  • I can only access the top menu bar if I open another application (e.g. Safari)
  • I am currently rebooting my iMac close to five times a day.

The MacOS Sierra Finder beachball showed up again today, this time when using Logic Pro X. When I was saving my Logic project, it got stuck, the "save as" window didn't open. I had to force quite Logic, and could not open it again. Of course, I had to reboot my iMac... again.

This issue has to do with any app interfacing with Finder. I don't know which situation, sequence of events, or predetermined conditions cause this to happen. But I really hope Apple fixes it soon. I'm tired of rebooting my iMac on a daily basis.

I just spent an hour on the phone with a senior Apple tech on this issue and made some progress.  First, Google Drive can cause this problem.  That was not my issue, however.  We finally figured out that there is a problem with Enhanced Dictation being enabled.  If I disable this, Finder works fine.  I was actually trying to use the cool method that someone figured out to allow you to use "Hey Siri" on Sierra and when I enabled Enhanced Dictation, that brought up the Finder problem on my system.  The tech support rep is bumping this up to Engineering and will get back to me mid-week with an update.

Thanks for checking that out! Yeah I think I have dictation enabled. I also had google drive installed on my old installation.

hopefully the issue gets solved soon!

I don't have dictation enabled, and I don't have Google Drive installed, so I don't know what's causing my Finder crashes on my end.

I did spend some time cleaning out some unused, old App Support folders from my Library that are not relevant on my iMac anymore. I don't know if this will help or not.

Also, Spotlight just crashed on me while I was looking for "Google Drive" on my iMac. I guess it's time to reboot... again.

Hello,

I have the same problem. Are there any news how to fix it? Did anyone find a solution?

Best Regards,

Thomas

All of a sudden, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iPhoto and iMovie started downloading on my iMac. I don't see any updates available in the App Store. I had already downloaded Pages, Keynote and Numbers prior to the macOS Sierra update. Very strange...

Any updates from the tech?

I disabled dictation and google drive, and just had the freeze happen again.

The only solution I have right now, is to use Bootcamp to finish up my report because the problem extends to applications too. I was using Pages the other day, and it crashed almost every 2-3 minutes.

I have the same problem here...

I've checked the options you guys tried, but no success at all.

Thank you so much for that. Resetting the SMC seems to have fixed my problems!
